Mononoke
So, I haven't been watching much new anime lately. I'm still trying to catch up from a couple seasons ago, when I was overwhelmed by the awesome quality of a bunch of shows (Ghost Hunt, Hataraki Man, Bartender, Yamato Nadeshiko, Bakumatsu..., etc), and also because I've been watching some classics from college, like Samurai 7 (which has a harem that not only has a sideways swing, but also an aquarium with a whale. WTF?).

Oh, man, I still haven't really written about any of those. I'll work on that. Until then, here's the new one I've been watching, vintage fall 2007.

It's called Mononoke, and man, is it addictive. It looks to be short (only 12 episodes long!), which I am all in favor of these days, but well done. It's the story of a pretty yet creepy elfy-human-fangy thing called the Medicine Seller who goes around, um, selling medicine. He also has a tendency to show up when there is death and violence afoot, usually when said death and violence is caused by a certain type of evil spirit called a mononoke. He figures out what caused the death and violence (I suspect it will always be a mononoke), what caused the mononoke to manifest, then sics his really odd sword on the mononoke.

The best thing about this show so far is it's style, which I will admit is likely to be a love it or hate it sort of thing. The art is highly stylized and very simple, with lots of gorgeous colors and tons of stills and long shots and pictures of the scenery. I think it's absolutely beautiful, like Gankutsuou without the headache-inducing clothing. Well, not really, the art is very different, but it's unique, innovative and fun to watch. So, um, watch it. It was subbed by Shinsen (boy, do I have a love-hate relationship with that group) and is up in a batch torrent on the tracker.

This is all after watching the first couple episodes. I'll post another review when I finish watching it. And maybe I'll post a review of one of the twenty other shows I'm meaning to write up.

You know, I was drooling over some of the early-released artwork for that series many moons ago. The stylized nature of the art intrigued me. Kind of Ookami and Gankutsuoh spliced, with its own unique classic-soda-ish flavor.

Anyhow, I want to get a peek at this one. The first episode before I commit to buying the pretty.

I completely missed it, because I've been on a bit of an anime hiatus (no highly awesome seria, work eating my life, sleep), but then someone on another community posted about how much she loved it, so I looked it up....

I seem to have lost your address. Email it to me?
